Who We Are

Living in Central Sarasota, we have often talked about how blessed we are to live in a small piece of paradise! We love that we get to live so close to the beach, though we don't make it out there as often as we should. Joseph and I have been married for 11 years and we have a 7-year-old, Benjamin, and a 5-year-old, Elijah. Life with two young boys keeps us busy and on our toes, but they are always full of laughter and a contagious joy. We enjoy cooking and sharing a meal with others, reading, soaking up the sun on Siesta Key when we have the chance, and spending time with friends and family.

Joseph and I both share a family history of addiction. Though God protected us from choosing that path, we saw many of those closest to us struggle throughout their lives battling a substance, living life in and out of prison, and some who have even lost their lives. We watched as the enemy robbed them of their joy, their lives, and negatively impacted the lives of those around them. Because of this very real part of our childhood, we have a heart for those who experience addiction as a daily struggle. Like us, many people think of Sarasota as paradise. For many, however it is more like a nightmare and this is what we have found as the number of deaths increases due to the opioid epidemic and so many have been effected. Joseph has been attending local Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meetings for 15 years and is part of what they call a "Home Group" in which he has developed several close relationships within the addiction community.

Through these years, he has had many opportunities to share Christ and be an example of God's love. Many people struggling with addiction look to NA as the final solution to their addiction. Unfortunately, the program falls short and does not offer them ultimate answers to their sin and addiction which can only be found in a relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ. Joseph's hope is to continue to be able to bring the Good News to anyone who is hungry and to disciple them into full maturity through relational, missional discipleship.

The Problem & The Need

Florida

Sunny, white sand beaches, rich history, and a city that embraces the arts just to name a few of the things Sarasota/Bradenton is known for. One of the things this area is not boasting about ,however is the fact that it is leading the state with the highest death rates due to the current drug epidemic. "According to the Medical Examiners Commission annual report, in 2015 Manatee County had the highest number of deaths per capita among Florida’s 67 counties in which the medical examiner found a presence of heroin, fentanyl, morphine or cocaine". Local authorities are desperate to find a solution to the problem.
Unfortunately, the magnitude of the problem is yet to be uncovered with the number of deaths increasing children, families, and whole communities are being affected. Locally there are several options offered for those looking for help with their addiction from programs through The Salvation Army, dozens of Narcotics Anonymous Meetings, and several rehabs/treatment centers.
Our ministry is similar to these programs in that it's heart is to see these individuals struggling with addiction succeed, however with God and His Gospel central in our process we are different in our approach. We are seeking to reach the addiction community through relational discipleship. Take a glimpse into how we are using this model and reaching lives in the short video below.

[2] And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.

Luke 10:2 (ESV)

Praise & Prayer

  • PRAISE God for His hand in our lives and how he continues to direct our path and open up the doors for new relationships and additional resources.

  • PRAISE God that He has been bringing back into our lives many of the guys that have gone back into active use in the past few years.

  • PRAY that the government will come up with a solution to keep opioids off of the streets and out of the hands of those abusing the drugs or those who are susceptible. And that medical professionals will look for alternatives to these drugs.

  • PRAY that God will bring more workers into this field to partner with us in serving this community.
